It's the democracy, stupid.

"Democracy is the worst form of government... except for all the others that have been tried." --Unknown (usually attributed to Churchill, incorrectly)
I don't know about you, but I've lately been hearing this argument a lot: do not worry about the potential negative impacts of <insert new technology here> because technological advancement has always created job expansion and an overall betterment of human opportunity. In this techno-utopian view, human flourishing is an axiomatic by-product of technological progress, and not an effect of how technologies are integrated and used. This argument begs the question by ignoring history. No technology's benefits are equitably distributed by default or through some ineluctable force of nature. It has always been the result of actions taken by people.Â
The industrial revolution had its roots in capitalism, but the broad distribution of its benefits was the fruit of democratic governance. Let's keep building businesses, solving problems, and inventing, and while we do that let's remember that we're all in this together. We need democracy to work, for this all to work out.
